If you're planning on a real Christmas wreath or fresh festive flowers this year, the honest answer to "when should I order?" is a little sooner than you'd think. Every December, our loveliest wreaths and full-size poinsettias tend to sell out within the first couple of weeks โ so getting your order in early is the best way to make sure you get exactly what you want. We're a family-run florist in Denby Dale, delivering into Huddersfield, Barnsley and the villages between, and this is the timeline we'd genuinely give you if you popped into the shop and asked.
Your Order-By Timeline
Christmas flowers aren't like a birthday bouquet you can order three days out. Real, fresh-cut and living stock runs to its own schedule, and once a week's worth is gone for the season, it's gone โ not restocked. As a rough guide:
- Real Christmas wreaths (fresh foliage, holly, hessian bows) โ order by mid-to-late November for the best choice of style and size. We only make a limited number by hand each week.
- Poinsettias โ order by the first week of December if you want a specific size or colour. They're seasonal nursery stock, so once a delivery's sold through we can't simply reorder before Christmas.
- Bulk & venue orders (parties, church, hospitality, table displays) โ 3โ4 weeks' notice minimum. If you're ordering for an office rather than a venue, we've a dedicated guide to corporate Christmas flowers โ the short version is: book earlier than feels necessary.
- Everyday festive bouquets & gifts โ more flexible, but next day delivery slots still fill up fast in the final week before Christmas.
Real wreaths are made in small batches through December, so booking early means a better choice of style and size.
What Sells Out First, and Why
Real wreaths go first because they're handmade in small batches. The fresh foliage, holly and berries that go into them are worked with over just a few weeks in December rather than stockpiled in advance, so each week's batch is limited. Poinsettias follow a similar pattern from the growing side โ they're grown to a schedule months ahead, so once a delivery has sold through, we simply can't get more in before Christmas.
Bulk orders are the third pinch point โ not because the flowers run out, but because the time to prepare them does. A large table-display or venue order can take a full morning to put together, and we can only fit so many of those into any one week in December.
Poinsettias make such a lovely festive display โ well worth getting your order in early.
